Francine Black, Berks Opera Company Artistic Director, is the consummate musician.  She is a singer, accompanist, educator, music director and conductor.  She began her musical career at the age of three, standing on her grandparents’ dining table in France, singing Mozart.  After immigrating to the US with her parents at a young age, she studied piano with Karl Binder, a protégé of Franz Liszt.  Later she studied music at West Chester University, with further studies in choral direction at Villanova and Duquesne Universities.  Having declined an offer from Richard Wagner’s grand-niece to study and perform in Europe, she devoted her life to furthering the art and love of music, particularly with talented young artists.  She taught in the Pennsbury and Boyertown Area School systems, as well as numerous private institutions.  She has directed church choirs since the 1960’s, and has taught private voice lessons for over 50 years. As a vocal teacher and coach she developed the “LOVE” method for instilling a true love of the art in the hearts and minds of her students.

An accomplished linguist, Francine is fluent in English, French, German and Serbian, and can read and write Italian.  She has translated and produced English supertitles for many of the foreign language operas.  She also produced a complete new translation of Orpheus in the Underworld, and has produced accurate and meaningful libretto translations for the singers to use in developing their character roles in the various operas.  She remains active with Berks Opera Company and has served as Chorus Master, Artistic Director, Conductor and Arranger for various productions.
